A "fixed gear bike" is a single speed bike with a direct drive train. This means that the cranks and your legs will be moving anytime that you are riding the bike. A velodrome track bike is a direct drive single speed bike with aggressive racing geometry. These bikes are designed for race use on a large banked circle tracks. Other fixed gear bikes are converted from multi speed road bikes with horizontal dropouts. Fixed gear bikes have been the preferred choice of bicycle messengers because they work in all conditions with minimum maintenance issues. The bike can be stopped or slowed down by applying backpressure on the pedals to lock up the crank and stop the rear wheel.

This style of bicycle pre dates the traditional coasting road and mountain bikes and they have certain advantages over a free coasting drive train.

A. There is considerably less maintenance and mechanical failure due to the absence of derailleurs, brake cables and other moving parts.

B. The direct drive train recycles pedal energy and reuses the gained momentum to power through each and every rotation of the crank arms.
